StudentSurvey.ie Autumn Workshop: Qualitative data analysis - results & methods recording

Chaired by Dr Suzanne Guerin (University College Dublin), this session gave attendees insight into the results and methods of four research projects carried out to analyse qualitative data generated by StudentSurvey.ie and PGR StudentSurvey.ie.

Dr Darragh McCashin spoke first on behalf of the project authored by himself and Christine Boyd of DCU School of Psychology. Access his presentation here

Dr Sarah Diffley (Atlantic Technological University) represented a research team which included Dr. Lydia Devenney, Dr. Isobel Cunningham & Dr. Vicky O’Rourke. Access her presentation here

Dr Rory McDaid (Marino Institute of Education) provided insights into the results of PGR StudentSurvey.ie through his synthesis of research carried out with Dr Michelle Share and Dr Caitríona Delaney of Trinity College Dublin. Access his presentation here.

Finally, Dr Stephen Erskine spoke on behalf of the project authored by Insight Statistical Consulting. Access his presentation here.

Analysis of the StudentSurvey.ie and PGR StudentSurvey.ie qualitative data is crucial, but it is also time-consuming and requires some expertise in the methods being used. We hope the outputs of the research commissioned by StudentSurvey.ie in 2020-2021 give you important insight into the results at a national level and inspire you to apply similar methods to your institution's data.

It was such a pleasure for me and for the authors to revisit this research, carried out in 2020-2021. The range of methdologies used and the level of expertise applied to the data is impressive. As are the results, which demonstrate significant levels of commonality as themes of major importance were revealed by the researchers. I hope institutions will find the results valuable and will be prompted to analyse their own qualitative data in new and interesting ways.
