Important news for postgraduate research students undertaking a Masters by Research and PhD! The PGR will now run every second year, and the next survey will take place in spring 2021.

The survey was piloted in 2018 and was fully implemented across 22 higher education institutions in 2019. The feedback was very positive from the survey so we are very keen to keep running it, but will do so on a biennial basis for now. for first year and final year undergrads and postgraduate students on taught programmes will run as normal, with the first institutions launching the survey on 3 February.

So watch out for the survey in 2021!

Following detailed discussions and consultation, the PGR Working Group decided to run PGR once every two years for the following reasons:

  • To reduce the risk of survey fatigue for postgraduate research students who, at present, are being asked to complete the same survey every year.
  • Students disengaging from the survey would mean a decrease in the response rate and in the representativeness of the data year-on-year. This risk is deserving of consideration as the PGR datasets for some participating higher education institutions are already quite small.
  • To give institutions more time to analyse the data they have and more time to implement meaningful changes based on the feedback from students. icon
